Giving kids a voice in family mediation.
What Is Kids In The Middle?
Kids In The Middle is an integrated, Child Consultancy service designed for children caught in the middle of family mediation, working with, and alongside Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners (FDRP’s), and other professional mediators, with the focus to remain out of the Family Court. When families go through separation or conflict, children's thoughts and feelings can sometimes be overlooked. This platform ensures that their voices are heard, their emotions acknowledged, and their perspectives considered in the decision-making process. Mediation isn’t just about resolving disputes between adults—it’s about finding solutions that support the well-being of the whole family. By giving children a safe space to express themselves, Kids in The Middle helps ensure they feel valued, understood, and included in shaping their own future.
Child-inclusive consultation is a process that actively involves children in family mediation, ensuring their voices, feelings, and perspectives are heard and considered when decisions about their future are made. Our specially trained and experienced Child Consultant and Practitioner at Kids In The Middle interacts with children in a safe and supportive environment, including online, allowing them to express their thoughts without pressure or influence. These interactions may include play based, age appropriate activities, art therapies, and adaptive questioning. The insights gained from these conversations are then shared with parents and FDRP’s to help them make informed, child-focused decisions. This approach empowers children, promotes emotional well-being, and helps families create parenting arrangements without the added stress of Family Court attendance, that truly reflect the needs and best interests of the child, fostering healthier post-separation relationships.
What’s Involved?
When parents separate, children often experience a range of emotions, including sadness, confusion, anger, guilt, and anxiety. They may feel torn between parents, fear abandonment, or worry about the future. These emotions can impact their social and emotional well-being, leading to difficulties in school, friendships, and self-esteem. Without proper support, children may struggle to express their feelings in healthy ways, potentially leading to behavioural issues or withdrawal. However, when their emotions are acknowledged and validated—through open communication and supportive systems—they are more likely to develop resilience, emotional security, and a sense of stability during this challenging transition. This is the foundation for Kids In The Middle.
